Grace MBC

From the very beginning, Pastor Daron Hawkins and his wife, First Lady Dawna Hawkins, were on fire for the vision God gave them for Grace. Our mission was clear and biblically grounded: to be a New Testament church rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ—studying His Word, expounding on His truth, and walking it out in love and power. As a congregation, we vowed to:

• Stand boldly on the Word of God
• Exalt the Savior
• Equip the Saints
• Exhort the Sinner

We also pledged to shine as a beacon of light in this dark world, so that others might see Jesus in us and give glory to the Father in Heaven (Matthew 5:16). We believed, and still believe, that if Jesus is lifted up, He will draw all men unto Himself (John 12:32).

Under Pastor Hawkins’ leadership, Grace became a warm and welcoming worship atmosphere where people of all walks of life felt free to praise God. Several vibrant ministries blossomed during this time, including:

• Women of Worship (W.O.W.)
• Youth Ministry
• Outreach Ministry
• Media Ministry
• Hospitality Ministry

Grace also grew in community engagement through events like the October Fall Fest, Sarcoidosis Awareness Programs, Family Fun Bowling, and Let’s Get Geared (a bike trail fellowship event). One of our annual highlights, Family and Friends Day, was faithfully celebrated each September.

Tragically, on July 25, 2017, Pastor Hawkins passed away unexpectedly, leaving a void in our hearts but a powerful legacy of faith. During this time of transition, Minister Avery Campbell stepped in and served with dignity and devotion as Interim Pastor.

To prayerfully discern God’s next chosen leader, Grace MBC members elected a Pastoral Search Committee consisting of Vera Bell, Lisa Spence, Arthur Cottrell, Hurlen Cottrell, and Stanley Hawkins. The committee, in collaboration with East Union MBC, carefully considered applicants and sought God’s direction through prayer and fasting.

In His perfect timing, God sent us Pastor Rodney Akins. On December 24, 2017, Grace MBC joyfully welcomed Pastor Rodney Akins and First Lady Sundra Akins into the Grace family. Pastor Akins continued the work of building up the church with biblical teaching, firm leadership, and a shepherd’s heart.

Now, in this new season of ministry, Pastor Desmond Smith was installed as the shepherd of Grace Missionary Baptist Church on July 13, 2025. Alongside him in loving support is his wife, First Lady Susan Smith, a faithful servant in her own right. With a heart for God’s people and a vision rooted in sound doctrine, Pastor Smith is leading Grace MBC forward—grounded in truth, fueled by faith, and committed to the mission of making Christ known.

Grace MBC stands poised to continue its legacy of faith, fellowship, and fruitfulness. We honor the pastors who came before, the saints who labored in love, and the God who has sustained us every step of the way.
